The School of Communication is committed to an interdisciplinary academic experience!
The School of Communication, originally established in 1975 and consisting of Journalism, Telecommunications, Speech, Theatre, and Communicative Disorders, was reduced to a single department in 1979 in response to university-wide management efficiency and cost containment concerns.
There was an increasing demand for communications professionals who respond to the demands of a multi-cultural workplace and electronic communication technology in a digital age. The Texas Southern University population consists primarily of non-white American minorities; and the population in the Department of Communications similarly reflects the diverse makeup of the University.
The Department of Communications was elevated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to the School of Communication.
The unique history of Texas Southern University and the individual and collective perspectives of its students allow the school to prepare and position its graduates for leadership in the communications industries throughout the state, nation, and world. In the effort to accomplish our mission, we offer hands-on access to the 35-year-old radio station and a state of the art recording studio.
In partnership with Comcast, our students have the opportunity to produce television programs for TSUTV/Comcast on-Demand using SOC television production facilities.
The School of Communication is committed to an interdisciplinary academic experience dedicated to the development of leaders and skilled practitioners in the several disciplines of human communication.
