Theme: The Academic Jewel: Legacy, Innovation, Excellence
In October 2025, the School of Communication (SOC) at Texas Southern University will proudly commemorate its 50th anniversary—an exceptional milestone in the institution’s legacy as a leading force among the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and urban centers of higher education.
Guided by the theme “The Academic Jewel: Legacy, Innovation, Excellence,” this commemoration pays tribute to the School’s enduring commitment to intellectual distinction, groundbreaking innovation, and the transformative preparation of future communicators. It is also a reflection of Texas Southern University’s historic mission. When TSU opened its doors in 1947, the idea of accessible, high-quality education for African Americans and other minorities was far from commonplace. Yet, through perseverance and vision, the university rose as a beacon of academic empowerment.
For five decades, the School of Communication has served as a vital incubator for
talent—shaping voices, elevating narratives, and advancing the art and science of
media, communication, and cultural expression. TSU, now a dynamic institution with
a student population representing all 50 states and more than 50 nations, celebrates
the thousands of alumni who have passed through its eight schools and colleges with
distinction.
This golden anniversary is more than a celebration—it is a reaffirmation of SOC’s
mission to educate, inspire, and innovate. As we reflect on our legacy, we look ahead
with renewed purpose to shape a new generation of communicators who will redefine
media, amplify truth, and build a more equitable future.
