TSU Online Library Transition

Texas Southern University’s Library Learning Center began transitioning a wide variety of content online when they moved across campus from the Terry Library last summer. One of the many purposes of the library is to provide electronic access to scholarly content online and meet the needs of scholars on all levels. Over the past 10 years, over $1 million dollars was spent to ensure the electronic resources and services appropriately supported the institution.

“Because the migration from a totally print collection toward electronic access to content has been gradual and intentional, TSU’s Library Learning Center is well positioned to support TSU’s online programs at this time,” said Reference/Research Librarian Emily Tuck.

During the summer of 2019, the staff spent time upgrading online resources and services. Since COVID-19 caused classes to transition to online instruction, the LLC has enhanced the implementation of online chat services, located on their website, to raise awareness of the librarian’s availability to answer questions. The chat box provides students with an immediate way to communicate.

Student Robert Reese reached out via the chat box feature for assistance with database login. He was assisted by Associate Library Director for Special Collection and Institutional Repository Haiying Sarah Li.

“Ms. Li did a great job in assisting me with what I came there for,” said Reese.

eBooks and online academic videos are also a way the LLC has offered assistance to both our faculty members and students. Students can view the eBooks online or download them to a tablet or mobile device. “This is especially significant now that access to print resource may be delayed due to library closures,” said Tuck.

“Remote access to ebooks, and most of the library’s online resources, just requires a valid T number.”

The LLC streaming video collection is vast and is used to enhance online instruction. It promotes a collaborative learning environment inside the virtual classroom. Everything from PBS documentaries to Shakespear plays are included. Peer-reviewed science videos showcase complex lab techniques and experiments that may be difficult to explain in a scholarly paper.

Our more than 200 plus scholarly databases offer premier packages to popular databases like SAGE and Elseuer (Science Direct). Students have enhanced access to JSTOR; a favorite for English, History, Music and for conducting historical research in all of the disciplines. News databases containing major metros around the world, including a complete run of the Houston Chronicle, are available to TSU students.

Scholars with Google accounts have the opportunity to utilize Google Scholar to access the TSU LLC database as they have housed a large portion of the library’s content online.
