Celebrate Juneteenth with TSU

With the recent events around the world, a holiday that originated in Texas is now receiving national recognition. Juneteenth celebrates the day that slaves in Galveston, TX, were notified of their freedom. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced the end of slavery. However, this news came almost two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Texas Southern University alumnus and former state representative, the late Al Edwards ‘66, initiated legislation to establish Juneteenth as a holiday in Texas. As a freshman state representative, Edwards, commonly known as “Mr. Juneteenth,” introduced the holiday under House Bill 1016.

This year, the TSU Office of Student Life, Student Government Association and The Royal Court will present a virtual Juneteenth celebration. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Friday, June 19, they will host hourly events on their Instagram page @txsustudentlife.

  • Health Tips for the Tiger Community Health tips for the Tiger Community will be provided by Bite Way Nutrition, LLC.

The Thurgood Marshall School of Law will commemorate Juneteenth 2020 by hosting a virtual Zoom event at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2020. “The African American Struggle and Racial Disparities Continue: An Historical Dialogue,” will feature TMSL legal experts TMSL Dean Joan R.M. Bullock, who will serve as moderator, Distinguished Professor of Law James Douglas, and Professor of Law Craig Jackson.
