Dr. Teriya Richmond Joins Texas Southern University as University Physician

Dr. Teriya Richmond, University Physician

Dr. Teriya Richmond brings a wealth of practical clincal and public health experience to her assignment as the University Physician at Texas Southern University. As University Physician, she oversees the daily medical operations of Student Health Services. Dr. Richmond recently took time to share more about her vision for success at TSU.

Q: What is Student Health Services?

A: We are an acute care facility providing high-quality health care.  This includes mental assessments, education, and wellness programs, in addition to institutional public health-related policy to promote a healthy TSU community in support academic success. Our facility maintains a dedicated team of medical professionals available to assist students, staff, and faculty in obtaining optimal primary health assistance.

Q: What is the vision for your role with Student Health Services?

A: My goal, as University Physician, is to be the provider of choice for health care and health information at TSU, especially for students.

I want Student Health Services to be the recognized resource and leader in collegiate health care and information. For me, it is important that I become a vital resource for students, and to be an integral part of the University’s educational mission.

While I am committed to bringing quality, evidence-based medical care to traditionally underserved communities, I have a special passion for women’s health issues.

Q: You not only work within the confines of TSU, but you find time to engage with the local surrounding community. Why is it important for you to reach beyond the campus community?

A: In most cases, our students, staff, faculty, and administrators live and thrive in the communities surrounding TSU. TSU SHAPE Initiative (TSI), for example, reaches into neighborhood across Houston to provide information and care regarding sexually transmitted infections (STI) and treatment services. TSI is a community-based partnership established by the Department of Social Work and funded by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). SHAPE stands for Substance Use, Mental Health, HIV/AIDS Prevention Education. TSI addresses these health disparities by offering student and community members free and confidential health screenings in-person and virtually, community-based referrals and service.

In most cases, STI can be prevented with the correct information and lifestyle choices. Additionally, as a physician, I am a public health practitioner as well. This means I get to be a transformative provider who can enhance health and wellness through various activities and initiatives beyond the scope of my daily practice. I believe it is vital for me to take my messages and parts of my clinical practice out into the community if they are unable to come to me at Student Health Services. This is one way to build relationships while addressing the need for proactive personal health care.

Q: What is your philosophy and approach to students and young adult health concerns?

A: I proudly bring a holistic approach to Student Health Services by concentrating on preventative care with students prior to possible full-blown medical emergencies. I want to provide a level of care and concern that is full circle and closes the loop on the medical care and treatment. I take time and call students to ensure they followed up on any recommendations and treatment protocols prescribed. I know it is rare and typically unheard of at other institutions. Just as students advocate for their classes and coursework, I want each of them to become advocates for their own health and wellbeing.

Student Health Services is a department within the Division of Enrollment and Student Success.

“We are excited to have Dr. Richmond on the team as our University Physician,” said Dr. DeNeia Thomas, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success. “Her presence and expertise on campus is invaluable as we continue to transform the lives of our students through enhanced health and wellness support and initiatives.”

A native of Chicago, Dr. Richmond received a bachelor’s degree from Mount Saint College summa cum laude. She earned both a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and School of Public Health.
