Texas Southern University Students Join Black and Jewish Unity Dinner to Foster Cross-Cultural Dialogue

Texas Southern University (TSU) students recently gathered with peers from Rice University and the University of Houston for a meaningful evening of dialogue and fellowship at a UNCF "Unity Dinner." Nearly 80 students participated in this event, which sought to strengthen the historic bonds between Black and Jewish students through shared experiences and open conversations.

This dinner series, supported by Hillel International and Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, acknowledges the long-standing alliance between Black and Jewish Americans—an alliance that was particularly strong during the Civil Rights Movement.

"It was an honor to help bring Robert Kraft's unity series to Houston and to have Texas Southern University play a leading role in this important convening,” said TSU Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons. “Many of us know the long history of friendship between our communities and wish to deepen these ties. Jewish Texans, including the Zeidmans, Prolers, and many others, have been longtime friends of TSU. As a state university board member, I appreciate our Governor’s clear direction on this topic. My intention is that our participation in this series will catalyze many more events, reigniting the historic relationship between TSU and Houston’s Jewish community."

“We appreciate the support from Texas Southern University leadership in convening our first Unity Dinner in Houston. TSU President Crawford and Chairman Simmons are key early partners, along with their counterparts at Rice University and University of Houston,” said John Eaves, program director of UNCF's Tikkun Olam Society.

Students broke bread with their peers from across the city and left the event thoughtful about what it means to build bridges between their communities.

“I enjoyed sharing a meal and making new friends. I know that earlier generations of Black and Jewish Houstonians worked together for good, and this dinner provided an opportunity for my generation to step up,” said Kohl Crawford, TSU junior and student leader.

The event also received support from diplomatic representatives and other Texas leaders.

Israel’s Consul General to the Southwest, Livia Link-Raviv, attended and reaffirmed the importance of these conversations. In a post on X, the Israeli Consulate in Houston stated, “We are proud to support events that bring communities together. The shared history and values between the Black and Jewish communities continue to inspire and strengthen us all.”

R.W. Bray from U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s office was in attendance and noted, “We love seeing our great Texas universities taking common sense steps to fight Antisemitism. It is vital that all communities step forward to support the Jewish community in this challenging time.”

Texas Southern University is honored to work together with UNCF and the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity, dialogue, and mutual understanding among individuals.
