Media powerhouse TEGNA visits the School of Communication

Texas Southern University’s School of Communication is thrilled to announce that TEGNA, one of the nation’s largest and most innovative multiplatform media companies, will visit campus on Thursday, March 6.

This unique Listen and Learn session offers students and faculty an unparalleled opportunity to hear directly from TEGNA’s Senior Content Recruiter about the rapidly evolving media landscape and the essential skills needed to thrive in today’s industry.

The day’s events will take place in the television studio and are designed to foster collaboration between TEGNA and the School of Communication, while providing students with real-world insights and career guidance. Faculty will also have the chance to discuss ways to align curriculum with industry needs and explore potential collaborative projects with TEGNA’s local station.

SOC Dean Dr. Christian Ulasi said TEGNA’s visit is an extraordinary opportunity for the University community.

“We are excited to have one of the largest media companies in the nation to visit our campus.  The opportunity to partner with TEGNA will give us a chance to align our programs with what is expected in the industry and provide students with future internships and jobs. Most importantly, this will allow the School of Communication to become a global leader in training the next generation of media professionals,” Ulasi said.

 

Event Schedule – Thursday, March 6

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. | Faculty Presentation

  • Essential skills for future media professionals
  • Best practices for developing curriculum to meet the needs of modern media, including multi-skilled journalism, AI integration, immersive storytelling, and data-driven journalism techniques
  • Insights on the future of television news, sports programming, and streaming in a digital-first era
  • Exploration of partnership opportunities between the School of Communication and TEGNA to train the next generation of journalists and content creators
  • Discussion on potential collaborative content projects with TEGNA’s Houston-based station

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. | Student Presentation

  • Insider tips on getting hired, advancing careers, and achieving long-term success in the media industry
  • Introduction to TEGNA’s “Producer-in-Residence” program
  • Guidance on building a standout resume reel
  • Practical advice on newsroom practices, including how to pitch stories and develop as newsroom leaders
  • Tips on navigating contracts, salary negotiations, and newsroom politics

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. | One-on-One Interviews

Juniors and seniors are invited to participate in exclusive one-on-one interviews with TEGNA’s Senior Content Recruiter for internship and job opportunities. (By invitation only.)
