The Texas Southern University Department of Athletics set an all-time high in its 2023-24 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score with a single-year rate of 979.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
"Simply amazing," said TSU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. "Our success is attributed to the entire campus. Everyone played a role, from the Board of Regents, President's Office, Provost's Office, Faculty, and Staff as all have supported our student-athletes."
TSU has also closed the gap toward the Division I national average, as the NCAA reported an average of 984 for the 2022-23 cycle. The department also had several teams attain the 1,000 APR mark for the past cycle and the teams will be publicly recognized by the NCAA over the next few months.
"I must give a special thanks to our Academic Enhancement team and Compliance Departments for working with our student-athletes daily to ensure they're put in a position to succeed. Led by Miss Kimberly Evans and Mr. Michael Moleta, we have 300-plus student-athletes in our department, and having to keep track of each one academically is challenging but rewarding at the same time when everyone performs their task.
"Lastly, I have to credit our coaching staff and student-athletes," added Granger. "Our primary mission at Texas Southern is to educate our student-athletes during their tenure here, and our coaches have done a solid job in upholding the mission. I want to also salute our student-athletes for their performance in the classroom and making academic history."
This latest news continues a string of academic successes at TSU. The department has won the SWAC's Academic Success Award for the 2023-24 and 2021-22 academic years.
