Hailey Butler heads to Wall Street with big dreams

Hailey Butler (JHJ '25) takes her Finance degree to Wall Street

As the class of 2025 commences from Texas Southern University and into the world, Hailey Butler stands out as a rising star from the Jesse H. Jones School of Business, preparing to launch her career in corporate banking at Deutsche Bank in New York.

Butler, originally from the Bahamas, came to TSU in 2021 after doing her own research on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

“My family is very big on HBCUs, so I just wanted to find some in the area,” Butler explains.

Ultimately, she chose TSU over Prairie View A&M, drawn by the vibrant Houston location and the strength of the university’s business program.

Majoring in finance with a concentration in commercial banking, Butler’s years at TSU have been packed with growth, opportunity and meaningful connections.

“When I first came to TSU and lived in the freshman dorms, a lot of the RAs and student leaders really took me in and showed me how they succeeded on campus,” she recalls. “Then I started to make connections with people in housing and the business school. They showed me how to fix a resume, apply for an internship, and just put my best foot forward.”

Butler’s journey was shaped not just by academics, but by the people around her.

“Always talk to people and connect with people,” she advises future students. “Not only from a career standpoint, but just getting to know people — that’s really the heart of TSU.”

One of Butler’s most cherished memories comes from participating in a high-stakes case study competition alongside two classmates.

“We traveled to New York and presented a financial analysis,” she says proudly. “We got so much support from faculty and even a video from the president at the time, Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young. It was fun because we got to bring back $500,000 for TSU and really put my degree to use.”

Butler has been a familiar face to TSU supporters, thanks to her features in the university’s Eye on Our Interns summer campaign. Those internships paid off: after her summer 2024 internship, Deutsche Bank offered her a full-time position in their corporate banking division, and she will soon relocate to New York to begin this next chapter.

Looking forward, Butler’s ambitions stretch beyond personal success. “I hope to become a banker in the future and really teach people in my country and wherever I go about financial literacy as well as investing,” she says.

From the Bahamas to Houston to Wall Street, Butler’s journey is a shining example of TSU excellence — and a reminder of the resilience, determination and community spirit that define the Tiger experience.
