TSU Graduate Spotlight: Marlon Olguin (JHJ '25)
For Marlon Olguin, graduation from Texas Southern University’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business marks not just the end of a chapter — but the beginning of a promising future.
Olguin, a finance major and proud Tiger Ambassador, will soon join the team at GEICO headquarters in Katy, Texas. But his path to success began when he chose TSU in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I wanted to stay in-state, close to home but far enough that I could have my independence,” says Olguin, who was born in Fort Worth and raised in Arlington. “I knew about TSU going into and leaving high school, and being an HBCU in a great city like Houston really sealed my decision.”
At TSU, Olguin not only focused on academics but took on leadership roles, serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) during his sophomore and junior years.
“One of my fondest memories is definitely being an RA,” he says. “Your coworkers become your lifelong friends, and we shared so many experiences together. That sense of community really shaped my time here.”
Olguin’s goals extend far beyond graduation. While he’s excited to start his role at GEICO, he’s even more energized by the long-term plans he’s set. “I want to be an investor, especially in real estate, and eventually work at a finance firm after getting my master’s,” he said. Fortunately, GEICO’s job offer includes support for advanced degrees, setting him up to pursue that dream.
Olguin says he is proud of many things during his time at TSU, and one of the biggest is the power of networking. “Networking is what pretty much gets you into every place,” he says. “That’s the foundation TSU gave me — the ability to connect and build relationships that open doors.”
His advice to incoming students? “Come to TSU — but don’t be that person who just stays in their room,” Olguin said. “Your first year is your most memorable because you’re on campus, meeting people, experiencing everything. Take advantage of it.”
As he moves forward, Olguin carries with him the resilience, connections, and memories built at TSU. With a job in hand, a master’s on the horizon, and big dreams of shaping his future in finance and real estate, he’s ready to show the world what a Tiger can do.
