The Canary Simmons Family Tree: A Legacy of Strength and Tradition

(l to r) Canary Simmons, Michael Simmons, Canary Michael Simmons

The roots of the Canary Simmons family tree run deep, intertwining with the history of Texas Southern University and the spirit of football. It all began with Canary Simmons, who arrived to Texas Southern in the early 1970s from Jacksonville, Florida. As a student-athlete, his dedication to the game and his studies laid the foundation for a legacy that would later span generations.

Canary's journey was marked by perseverance and passion. He played football with a fierce determination, earning respect both on and off the field. His experiences at Texas Southern shaped him into a man of integrity and strength, qualities he passed down to his family.

Michael Simmons, Canary's son, grew up hearing stories of his father's time at TSU. Inspired by these stories, Michael decided to follow in his father's footsteps. In the mid-1990s, he came to TSU, continuing the family tradition. Michael's time at the university was a testament to the values instilled in him by his father. He played football with the same fervor, becoming a beacon of pride for the Simmons family.

The legacy did not end with Michael. Canary Michael Simmons, named after his grandfather, embraced the family tradition with pride. From 2021 to 2024, he wore the TSU football jersey, playing with the same passion that had driven his grandfather and father.

On May 9, 2025, Canary Michael Simmons graduated, marking the culmination of a journey that began over five decades ago.

Three generations of the Simmons family have now walked the grounds of Texas Southern University, each leaving their mark. The family tree, rooted in the values of strength, dedication, and tradition, stands tall. The Simmons family has not just played the game; they have woven their story into the very fabric of TSU, creating a legacy that will inspire future generations.
