The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The ADA of 1990 provides civil rights protection for individual with disabilities. It guarantees equal opportunities for “qualified individuals” with disabilities in all public facilities, educational programs, activities, services and benefits. The ADA upholds and maintains compliance standards to ensure institutions of higher education policies, procedures and practices are non-discriminatory.
The Americans with Disabilities Amendment Act (ADAAA)
The ADAAA of 2008 broaden the definition of disability to cover impairments that are episodic or in remission that substantially limits a major life activity when active.
Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973
No otherwise qualified person with a disability…shall solely by reason of …disability, be denied benefits, excluded from participating, or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
