Welcome to the TSU SHAPE Initiative
The Texas Southern University (TSU) SHAPE Initiative is a university and community-based partnership that ultimately seeks to increase access to substance use/dependence, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis-C (HCV) information, testing and referrals. Through a variety of awareness activities, the program offers free HIV and HCV testing, as well as drug and alcohol screenings for TSU, enrolled students and other young adults living, working, and/or going to school in the Greater Third Ward area. Consistent with the overall National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the program’s primary goals include implementing behavioral and environmentally sustainable strategies that reduce HIV, HCV and substance use/dependence among young adults.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015):
HIV, aka human immunodeficiency virus, weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. At the end of 2012, an estimated 1.2 million persons aged 13 and older were living with HIV infection in the United States, including 156,300 (12.8%) persons whose infections had not been diagnosed.
HCV is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C virus which can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis infection, ranging in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness. HCV infection is the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the United States, with an estimated 2.7 million persons living with the chronic infection. Studies indicate sexual transmission of HCV can occur, especially among persons with HIV infection. The risk of contracting HCV increases with other STD’s and/or sex with multiple partners. With your help and through our extensive network of university and community-based
We can fight back by raising awareness and reducing the rates of HIV, HCV, and substance use/dependence in our communities!
