Congratulations 2020 Graduates
Dr. Yoruba Mutakkabir received the Scholarly Research/ Creative Activity Award. The
Scholarly Research/Creative Activity Award is to recognize faculty members whose research
and scholarly activities are exceptional and meritorious.Tenured and Tenured-Track
Faculty members may apply.
This award is given to a maximum of one recipient each year and includes a $2,500
stipend.
Graduate Assistants, Kendall Denson and Verose Sanders were both accepted into the U.S. Olympic Committee Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (F.L.A.M.E.) program. The U.S. Olympic Committee’s Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program provides diverse college and graduate-level students with a unique look into the world of elite sport. This eight-day program offers an exciting and rigorous curriculum designed to increase knowledge of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movements. Accepted students participate in personal and professional development workshops in preparation for a career in sports.
Brian McDonald, was recently voted to serve as interim superintendent of the Pasadena, California Unified School District Board of Education. McDonald, who holds a master’s degree in education administration from Texas Southern University, previously served as the school improvement officer in the Houston Independent School District and an elementary and middle school principal for six years. Since coming to the district as chief academic officer in 2011, MacDonald, who speaks Spanish fluently, has overseen the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. He has also led the district’s magnet school program and expanded the district’s dual-language immersion programs.

Each year Houston Area of Retired Teachers (HART) awards five $1000 scholarships to students planning a career in teaching. This past year’s winners were all students at Texas Southern University (TSU). Congratulations to each winner and we look forward to them joining the ranks of teachers/educators when they complete their degree.

Dr. Lacey Reynolds, Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, was inducted into the Utica Junior College Hall of Honors in Jackson, Mississippi on March 25, 2016. He was also inducted into the Broad Street High School Athletics Hall of Fame in Shelby, Mississippi on May 24, 2016. Dr. Reynolds received the Outstanding Community Services Award from MD Anderson on June 17, 2016.

A professor and a doctoral graduate from College of Education at Texas Southern University
received awards from the 2015 National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE)
in Washington, DC. NABSE presented Dr. Jay Cummings with the Lifetime Achievement
Award for contributions that spoke to the significant theme of “Saving African-American
Children” and honoring significant efforts of their teachers and administrators. Previously,
his outstanding engagement led to recognitions at prior NABSE conferences as the W.E.B.
DuBois Hall of Fame Award and a Founder’s Award.
His leadership and engagement are represented by chairing NABSE’s Demonstration Schools
and Communities Initiative, organizing as a Founder and providing presidential leadership
in the establishment of affiliates that are operating in Texas. Also included in the
listings are: Dallas Regional Alliance of Black School Educators (DRABSE), the Austin
Alliance of Black School Educators (ABSE), and the Texas Alliance of Black School
Educators (TABSE).
NABSE recognized Dr. Dawn Dubose Randle, a doctoral graduate from the College of Education
at Texas Southern University, as the recipient of the “Principal of the Year Award”
for outstanding service to her school, students and community. Also, during this dedicated
service, Dr. Randle led the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE)
to operationalize that “all children can learn when our educators teach effectively.”
Recently retired, Dr. Cherry Gooden, Dr. Emile Owens, TSU-COE Professor, and Dr. Rosalyn
Vaughn, TSU-COE doctoral graduate provided support and congratulations to the awardees.
Dr. Dominque Guinn is the recipient of the 2020 Empowering Community Action grant. This funding opportunity
is designed to address the impact of HIV among Black and Latinx gay and bisexual men,
other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), transgender individuals, and Black women
across Texas.
Events
President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young, Ph.D., is incredibly honored to serve as the 13th President of Texas Southern University. Dr. Young is excited to officially become a proud Tiger and is eager to lead TSU to new heights. In this video, President Young greets TSU’s students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.

Increasing the number of students is an integral part of any educational program and recruitment efforts cannot start soon enough. The sooner you can reach young, bright, impressionable minds, the better. Reaching students at an early age allows you to impress upon them the importance of an education.
On April 19, 2018 the Texas Southern University College of Education set-up tables in the lobby ready to meet and greet Middle School Day Students. This is designed to support the Office of Recruitment to promote literacy, higher education and fitness among youth. The day’s events specifically focused on encouraging students to stay in school, complete their secondary education, and prepare to attend college, with hopes they become TSU Tigers.
Educational Administration and Foundations was also one of four departments on the front line at T.S.U. Tiger Day on February 23, 2018 providing literature to high school students on the various programs offered. This event was held in the T.S.U. Rec-Center. Dr. Dominic Thomas and Jeffery Lindsey served as the representatives for the Educational Administration recruitment table. Dr. Thomas and Mr. Lindsey did an outstanding job interacting with the students, and both were able to motivate some parents and high school teachers to consider applying for the masters and doctoral programs in Educational Administration.
Overall, both events were a huge success and Educational Administration and Foundations was excited to be a part of such an enlightening and productive experience.
Texas Counseling Association 61st Annual Professional Growth Conference-Six faculty members in the Counseling Department presented peer-reviewed papers at the 61st Annual Professional Growth Conference in November 14-17, 2017, held in Galveston, Texas.
The following presentations were made:
Irvine Epps and Shanna Broussard presented on “New Horizons in Post Human Trafficking Trauma: Getting Beyond the Silence, Shame, and Suffering”; Jessica Davis, Candy H. Ratliff, and Carol H. Parker presented on “Predatory Relationships in Schools: What’s a Counselor to do?”; Joyce Finch presented on “Experiential Training in Integrated Behavioral Healthcare”.

The Bows & Bowties event provides mentoring and college exposure for middle school students while encouraging higher education interest as well. Bows & Bowties is conducted by COE’s Field Based 1 and 2 students. Over 70 middle school students visiting from Klein Intermediate and Young Women’s Preparatory College eagerly attended the College of Education’s Bows and Bowties event on Wednesday, November 8th. The Field Based students provided a college experience for the middle schoolers by delivering interactive educational sessions. These sessions included topics such as Keys to College Success, Campus Organization Involvement, Dressing for Success, and much more. The Bows and Bowties event was completed with the COE students leading a campus tour.

The Health and Kinesiology Club along with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee collected shoes for families affected by Hurricane Harvey. The organizations collected over 1200 pairs of tennis shoes, kid shoes, and dress shoes. There were some donations made in the actual boxes including a pair of Air Jordans. It is our hope that they will bless those families in need.
The College of Education hosted the Excellence in Education Awards Gala to honor outstanding educators and raise funds for our local scholarship fund. Proceeds support scholarships for TSU students majoring in Education.
