Applying for VA Education Benefits at TSU
Texas Southern University offers VA education benefits through programs like the Montgomery GI Bill®, Post-9/11 GI Bill®, and Vocational Rehabilitation for Disabled Veterans. New and transfer students must complete the VA Application for Benefits (VONAPP) online, receive a Certificate of Eligibility, and submit the TSU Request for Certification to process benefits. Approved tuition payments are applied after course registration and verification. TSU supports student veterans and dependents with accessible funding options for higher education.
Applying for Benefits
Education Benefits Programs offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs:
- Chapter 30-Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB) and Active Duty MGIB
- Chapter 31-Vocational Rehabilitation (Disabled Veterans)
- Chapter 33-Post 9/11 GI Bill®
- Chapter 35-Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program
- Chapter 1606-Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserves (MGIB-SR)
- Chapter 1607-Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP)
Active-duty Service members who plan to use Military Tuition Assistance (TA) are encouraged to consult with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) or designated military education counselors before enrolling in courses at Texas Southern University. The ESO can provide guidance regarding TA eligibility, Service-specific requirements, degree plan approval, funding limitations, and academic planning.
After student is admitted into TSU:
- Student completes the VA’s Application for Benefits;(VONAPP) ONLINE
- Student receives Certificate of Eligibility in the mail from the VA
- Student completes the TSU online Request for Certification on the veterans services page
- Student’s request is processed within 5-7 business days after:
- All required documentation has been received (Chapter 35 Vocational Rehabilitation counselors fax documents to TSU)
- Student has registered for classes
- Classes are verified as a part of degree plan
- Benefit payments for tuition and fees will be applied to the student’s account
