SELF Cares salutes TSU first responders

Posted on Monday, September 04, 2017

Bo Porter and his wife, Stacey honored Texas Southern University’s first responders today through their SELF Foundation. Porter, a Major League Baseball executive and former Houston Astros manager, presented TSU Police Department Chief Mary Young with the SELF Foundation Award of Honor. All campus emergency staff received individual Medals of Honor from the Foundation.

“The commitment TSU first responders showed during the unprecedented events of Hurricane Harvey should and will be honored forever,” Porter said. “Yes, our city needs to be repaired and rebuilt, but this is an opportunity for us to say thank you for your service in protecting our greatest asset, which is our children.”

Shawn Taylor, president and operating partner of Zaxby’s Houston, LLC, provided lunch for the event. The Porters donated $5,000 and Taylor donated $2,500 to TSU Cares, a relief assistance fund for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

TSU President Austin Lane said, “We are TSU strong and more resilient when we have organizations such as the Stacey and Bo Porter SELF Foundation taking time to help students at Texas Southern University.”

Amanda Edwards, City Council Member At-Large-Position 4, and Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees member, were in attendance at the event.
